Insurance and Open Enrollment

Healthcare has been a hot topic in the news lately. Funding for the Children’s Health Insurance Program (CHIP), open enrollment for the Affordable Care Act, whether or not Medicaid will continue to be retroactive, and significantly reduced funding for Navigators. Many people have strong feelings about what needs to be done politically in regards to the future of healthcare in our nation.

However, here at His Hands we have the opportunity to see firsthand the people impacted by these developments. In a world of statistics, we get the privilege of working with the men and women directly, hearing their individual stories and doing our best to provide assistance.

Each individual and family has a unique circumstance, but two themes emerge during insurance appointments. First, insurance can be confusing for patients to understand. It is important for them to understand the costs and coverages associated with each policy option, so that they can make the best decision for their healthcare coverage. Second, our patients are grateful. The simple act of helping them apply online and discussing questions they have provides relief. One patient was almost in tears as she described the anxiety she experienced attempting to sign up for the marketplace last year. In the end, she was so overwhelmed she halted the application process and went without insurance for all of 2017. She gave a big smile and a giant hug as she left our office with her 2018 policy selected. Time and time again we are thanked for taking the time to walk with them through the process, and for those who do not have any financially feasible insurance options, we are happy to continue to provide services as long as we are needed. Thank you for making the services of our Patient Advocate available for people who need them.
