We have the privilege to connect with local colleges to encourage and educate students entering the medical field and non-profit world. Nurses come to His Hands from Mount Mercy University, Allen College. Des Moines Area College (DMAC) and University of Iowa send their graduate students in medicine and pharmacy to volunteer. Coe College and Kirkwood Community College send work study students to serve at the front desk. Dental hygiene students to serve in our dental clinic.
Each fall we partner with Mount Mercy University’s social work program to have a senior level student as our social work intern. This fall our intern is Hilaire. He will be serving here twelve hours per week until the beginning of December. Hilaire is originally from Congo and has been in the United States almost five years now. He is fluent in four languages. He will be working alongside Amy, our Patient Advocate, to screen individuals for insurance and assist with community referrals. We look forward to learning from Hilaire about how to be culturally sensitive to our patients who are immigrants from Africa. We also look forward to him being able to show empathy and support to our patients, having a more personal connection to some of the struggles and barriers they face as immigrants to the United States. One of the aspects that drew Hilaire to our clinic was that we incorporate faith into the services we provide our patients.
So if you see him around, know that he will be here to learn and serve patients this fall semester. It is especially helpful to have another person here to meet with our clinic patients during November and December when enrollment is open for the marketplace insurance. So welcome Hilaire and all of the students who help us serve our patients here at His Hands.
