Dr. JoLynn Glanzer joined His Hands as a volunteer in October 2013. Cindy Ziegler was the Clinic Coordinator at that time and had sent Dr. Glanzer a note asking if she would be interested in volunteering and after she toured the clinic, she wanted to help. The registration process for volunteer physicians was completed through the State and she began working one day a week. One day soon became two days a week because more people needed health care. Now, she and Dr. Janda, work together two days a week to maximize the number of people seen each day. Working at the clinic allows Dr. Glanzer to do what she loves to do and that is practicing medicine without the long days, weekends and holidays of an actual office.
Dr. Glanzer became a Christian at the age of 8 during Daily Vacation Bible School. During middle school she decided medicine was the career she wanted and after graduating from Iowa State University she headed off to PT school at the U of I and after graduating from PT school entered Medical School.
In 1975, after finishing Medical School she moved to Cedar Rapids and entered the Family Practice Residency through Mercy and St. Luke’s Hospitals completing that phase of her education in 1978. She then worked in private practice until March of 2013 and most of that time was spent in practice with Dr. MA Nelson. Those were great, but very busy years.
One of the patients that stands out in her work at the clinic was a woman with back pain. To get to the clinic she had to crawl on her hands and knees to get to the cab. When she arrived the nurses had to help her out of the cab and into a wheelchair. Her back pain had become so severe she couldn’t walk and she was severely dehydrated. Her condition was truly critical. The nurses took her to the hospital where she was admitted and rehydrated and when stable medically underwent a 6 hour back surgery. The people at the clinic saved her life.
His Hands Clinic daily represents the story told by Jesus when a man was attacked, robbed and left to die. Two people saw him on the road and walked around him but one took care of him. Jesus asked, “Which of these three do you think was a neighbor to the man who fell into the hands of the robbers?” The expert in the law replied, “The one who had mercy on him.” Jesus told him, “Go and do likewise” (Luke 10:36-37). His Hands Clinic is doing ‘likewise’.
